Moon+ Reader Updated With Support for Epub3 Video

moon plus logoEpub3 still isn’t all that well supported in the mainstream reading apps but it looks like the independent app developers are starting to make headway.

Moon+ Reader for Android was updated earlier this week, and in addition to the usual bug fixes, performance improvements, and usability changes this app also gained new support for audio and video.

Technically the new content support was added in the last update, but I just noticed it this week. Since no one has reported on it yet I am going to regard this story as breaking news.

I have tested the free app and can confirm that it supports video. I couldn’t get my Nook HD+ to take a screen shot, but the video played.

And as you can see in the screenshot below, this app also supports a lot of the cooler features found on its larger competitors, including  (optional) animated page curl, estimated reading time, and user defined formatting.

Moon+ Reader also appears to support right to left languages like Arabic, though of course I can’t confirm this (I can’t read the language). The app doesn’t appear to support any other Epub3 features, so far as I know, but that’s not a criticism; the developers didn’t claim support for the rest of Epub3.

Moon+ Reader is also on sale this week in celebration of its 3rd anniversary.Act fast and you can get the paid version for $2.50. It has more features and of course is ad-free.

Tested the free version on my SGS Galaxy SIII today. Audio and video support was good but not great. When I played the audio files, the notification bar at the bottom of the app screen showed the progress bar whereas the original clickable bar underneath the audio disappears. The eBook I tested was our own EPUB3 WWII manual where there are several multimedia files. To resume the clickable bar to its original position, I had to tap "Stop" button in the progress bar. In terms of video play, there’s no full screen icon available yet so the video was played in letterbox mode. The video’s frame width is disproportionately small filling the modest space in the center area of the screen.

One more thing to add real quick, hopefully Moon+ will support the pop up note feature so readers will not have to leave their page to read the footnotes in a separate page as hyperlinks.

Nevertheless, this update brings massive improvement over the previous version and significantly enhances EPUB 3 eBooks to be read on Android devices. Thank for your blog anyway.
