Philly newspapers to bundle android tablets with subscription

I’ve heard of papers giving stuff away with a new subscription, but this is a first.

The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News announced today that they plan to offer a new digital subscription plan. Not very many details have been released so far, and we don’t know the price, terms, or exactly which Android tablet will be included. But I can report that there will be a pilot program with 2 thousand tablets in August, and later in the year they should expand it to more subscribers. Also later this year the website (home of the Philadelphia Inquirer) will introduce paid, premium content as well as a hyperlocal news channel.

The projected cost is somewhere in 6 figures, and publisher Greg Osberg will talk more about the initiative in a presentation this afternoon.

This is an interesting idea, and I look forward to seeing how it pans out.
