Reuters: New Nexus 7 to Ship in July With a Qualcomm CPU

nexus-7-google-tablet[1]Reuters is reporting this morning that:

Google Inc will launch a new version of its Nexus 7 tablet powered by Qualcomm Inc’s Snapdragon processor around July, two sources told Reuters, as the software giant pushes deeper into the cut-price mobile hardware market.

Funny, that’s what almost exactly Digitimes reported 3 weeks ago. Digitimes did have the ship date as May, not July, but that could reflect the launch date vs the actual ship date.

Reuters goes on to add that the new tablet will have a thinner bezel and  higher resolution screen. One of their sources also mentions that Google is using a Qualcomm chip for power reasons, not as a result of the Tegra 4 connectivity or production issues that Digitimes reported. There are also hints that this tablet might be priced at $150, though that same source also says Google might reduce the original Nexus 7 in price and sell the new model at $199.

As I wrote when I reported on this rumor a few weeks ago, the timing makes sense. Assuming that Google plans to release a yearly update, which is the norm in consumer electronics, then a projected launch between May and July fits in with Google’s previous launches.

And as for the rest of the rumors, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Excellent. Now all we need is an announcement from Samsung that they are going to be updating their Galaxy Players.
