Smashwords Hits New Milestone – 250,000 Indie eBooks Distributed
Smashwords reaffirmed its claim to the title of world’s largest indie ebook distributor today.
Mark Coker has announced on the SW blog that the 250 thousandth ebook had been uploaded and distributed to Smashwords' partner ebookstores. This milestone comes after a record month for uploads, with over 9,000 books released via Smashwords in the last 30 days.
In comparison, Smashwords distributed only 140 titles in its first year and only 6,000 titles in its second.
Smashwords was launched in 2008 as a result of the frustration experienced by Mark Coker in trying to get his book published. Boob Tube, a novel that explores the wild and wacky world of daytime television soap operas, kept getting passed over by publishers.
Mark believed that there was a market for the book that the publishers weren’t seeing, so he launched Smashwords to tap into the growing opportunities of the ebook market. Along the way he found that the independent author has greater creative control, a faster publishing cycle, and potentially a significantly larger share of revenues.
