The Lumi News Reader Service is 2 Weeks Old And Still Doesn’t Work
Next up in my search for Google Reader replacements is a relatively new service that, thanks to an update today, went from simply not working to trying to prevent me from using the web at all.
When Lumi launched their effortless news reader service a couple weeks ago I was intrigued. I don’t usually go for aggregators that think they’re better than I am at picking my reading material, but I liked the idea of a service that would choose content based on my browsing history. I decided to give it a try.
Oh my, that was a waste of time.
On day one I followed all the steps need to use the service. I installed the plugin, logged in with my Twitter account, and sat back to wait for Lumi to crunch my browsing history and suggest new content for me to read.
I’m still waiting.
This is day 14 and the webpage is still telling me that it is processing my browsing history. (I know I spend a lot of time online but that’s a little ridiculous.) But never mind that; I am officially giving up on Lumi today.
It’s not just that it has yet to suggest any content; I’m giving up on Lumi because whatever the developers did last night to fix the problem didn’t help; instead it slowed down Firefox to the point where it was unusable. Basic activities like switching or closing tabs took forever.
Yes, I did reach out to Lumi on Twitter and I was told this morning that they had the problem fixed. All I had to do was reset my account and the process would start afresh.
Yeah, that worked well.
Don’t get me wrong, I am willing to try new ways to find content. An information junkie has to keep looking for new sources and new methods, otherwise we tend to get locked into the limited silo consisting of what we already know.
But Lumi simply doesn’t work for me.
Have you tried it?
