Regarding “Comping White”. If minority authors can’t get in with the mainstream publishing industry (white barriers or otherwise) why don’t they go the self publish route?
Independent and corporate publishing are very different things. One key difference being that many mainstream publications (magazines, newspapers, radio programs, etc.) decline to consider “self-published” work for review and discussion, which means that it doesn’t become part of the conversation of literature, so to speak.
While it’s good that KDP is an option that helps the situation overall (and not just for minority authors, but all authors), it’s not really a solution for the systemic issue.
