Infographic: How Much Does Google Really Know About You?

With the US Congress recently having passed the CISA surveillance bill under the guise of enacting a budget, I’m sure we’re all aware just how far the spying extends, but the national governments aren’t the only ones watching your every online and offline move.

The following infographic details just how much information Google collects on you through its various services. Google is an ad company (so is Facebook), and it uses all of that data to better target you with adverts. As you read through the infographic, you might be amazed to see how much they know.

Google, Apple and Microsoft all do similar things with your data. Note that DuckDuckGo is a search engine that doesn’t track you.

So…if I didn’t use Gmail, what email would you suggest?

Heather, not really worried about advertisers but now wondering what effective email would compare to Gmail.

None of this actually bothers me. I knew going into it that I was the product for Google, but the services that I receive in return (mostly for free with the exception of my $9.99 subscription to their music service) are well worth it! Yes, they track me everywhere and while I do everything, but they also make that data easily and readily available to me. For a basic example, using Google Now on my Android phone, Gmail has the details of my recent purchases and the tracking information will display on Google Now without me having to go into my email and click through to different websites to view the tracking. For my contacts? They’re available everywhere I can access Google from. Lose my phone? No problem, typing "find my phone" into the search engine will provide me a pretty decent location and give me the option to make my phone ring – even if it’s on silent.

Yes, I know I’m their product and I’m okay with that.
