google play booksAs we reach the arbitrary endpoint for another circle around the sun,  Google has crunched the numbers and posted a list of the most downloaded ebooks, apps, music, and movies in Google Play. No ebook app made the top of the app list, but when it comes to news sources the NYTimes beat out TMZ as the most downloaded app, with Forbes, The Verge, and the Huffington Post filling out the top 5.

  1. The New York Times
  2. TMZ
  3. Forbes Now
  4. The Verge
  5. The Huffington Post

The most downloaded ebook list is equally unsurprising, with 4 of the top 5 titles all tied to a movie released this year. The only one not tied to a movie was Fifty Shades of Grey, a perennial favorite.

  1. The Fault in Our Stars
  2. Fifty Shades of Grey
  3. Divergent
  4. Twelve Years a Slave
  5. Insurgent

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."
