Amazon Adds All-Bold Font in Kindle Update 5.8.7

Amazon has released firmware update 5.8.7 for its Kindle e-readers, introducing a high-visibility font option in response to long-standing user requests. The update includes "Ember Bold," a heavier version of the Amazon Ember typeface originally launched in April alongside the Kindle Oasis.

The primary objective of this new font is to enhance legibility for users with visual impairments or those who find standard font weights difficult to read. Previously, Kindle users seeking darker text often turned to competitors like Kobo, which allows for custom font installations and weight adjustments, or utilized third-party reading applications such as FBReader.

The lack of a bolding feature has been a point of contention for accessibility advocates for years. Figures such as David Rothman of Teleread have campaigned for this addition to accommodate elderly readers and individuals with specific vision needs. While some users have expressed a preference for a slider-based system to adjust thickness—similar to the interface found on Kobo devices—this update represents a significant step toward improved accessibility within the Kindle ecosystem.

The software update is currently available via Amazon’s website and is compatible with the sixth-generation Kindle Paperwhite and all subsequent models. While Kindles are designed to receive updates automatically over Wi-Fi, some users report that manual installation is often necessary to receive the latest features promptly upon release.

Early feedback from the community suggests that while Ember Bold is a welcome addition, there remains a demand for bolded versions of serif fonts. Additionally, some users noted that a universal bolding setting would be preferable to a single bold typeface, as it would allow for better distinction of subheadings and stylized text within e-books.
