Amazon Now Bundling Kindle Unlimited With New Kindles, Fire Tablets

kindle fire hd 6 unlimited bundleIf you’ve been waiting to pick up a Kindle on Black Friday then I have some good news for you: a better deal has come along. I’ve just learned that Amazon is now offering Kindle Unlimited as part of bundles with select Kindle and Fire hardware.

Kindle Unlimited is Amazon’s subscription ebook service. It usually costs $10 a month for access to a catalog of around 750,000 ebooks (and a few audiobooks). But under the new bundle program you can get the basic Kindle with 6 months KU for $99, or about $40 less than what it would cost separately ($79 + 6*10 = $139).

Amazon is also offering similar bundles for Fire HD 6, Kindle Paperwhite, and the Fire HD 7.

The bundle offer is only good for these 4 devices, so you can’t buy a Voyage or a Fire HDX and get the 6 months free, alas. But on the upside I’ve checked and I can confirm that you can buy a bundle as a gift. And like Amazon’s past bundle deals, the discount is applied when you check out.

  • Kindle $99
  • Kindle Paperwhite $149
  • Fire HD 6 – $129
  • Fire HD 7 $169

So far as I know this is the first time Amazon has offered a bundle for KU. Their smaller competitor Oyster has worked with QVC to bundle its service with select tablets, and as you might recall Amazon offered a bundle last week which combined Amazon prime and Amazon hardware.

Are you going to get one? What about giving one as a gift?

2nd-gen KPW. And i don’t know when Amazon will ship, sorry.

Various Kindle models will be on sale at several retailers so I’m not sure this bundle is so great a deal.

Kindle $49
Kindle PW $99
Fire 6 $79
Fire 7 $109

Basically, it amounts to one free month which is always available.

Are you sure that the BF deals won’t be in limited supply?

Fbone November 25, 2014 um 10:24 pm

No. I’m just pointing out the real savings may not be as significant as it seems. If one purchases a device at Amazon, they will pay $30 for an extra 5 months. First month is free, if you haven’t already used it. A savings of $20.

A number of retailers have or will have sales that reduce prices $20 or more. Staples has the Fire HD7 now for $109, cheaper than the Amazon bundle.

As per Fbone, if Amazon and its cheerleaders repeat often enough that Amazon is the cheapest place to go, people start to believe it. It’s rarely born out by reality.

The reality is Amazon knows when it’s on to a winner with KU. Most titles are indie, and indies are getting shafted with ever-falling "royalty" pay-outs.

Back when it was KOLL pay-outs averaged around $2.20. Even since KU launched the payout has plunged, last at about $1.30, despite Amazon increasing the pot each time.

They send out the KDP newsletter shouting about the increased pot each month, while making it almost impossible to find out what the actual payout has been, and of course there’s no assurance of what it will be.

Great for the chosen few getting handed compensation in the form of the All-Stars payouts.

Great for lucky few others to. There has to be winners. But for the majority it’s a stealth royalty cut for those in and reduced visibility for those not in.

Can you imagine the outcry from the Amazon cheerleaders if Scribd or Oyster were dropping the payout month on month?

It’s not working for me either. Strange.

I’ll see what I can do to fix it. Thanks for the heads up.

I think it’s working now. Thanks again.
