Amazon to Open Amazon Books Bookstore Outside of Phoenix, AZ

Amazon opened its 2oth bookstore in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Tuesday. The store occupies a 4,000-square-foot space in a new building in the Scottsdale Quarter development, and based on the description it sounds less like a bookstore than a department store.

The Phoenix Business Journal reported that the store carries gadgets, toys and games, and books. The stock is selected by a team of curators that choose merchandise that are either rated 4-stars and above online, have high sales, or were just released.

“We designed the store for discovery,” Drew Sheriff, director of Amazon Physical Stores, told the Business Journal. “Customers really benefit by browsing around.” They went on to add that the store is set up to resemble shopping on Amazon.com, with sections titled “today’s deals.”

Amazon has recently renovated a number of its stores to include larger electronics sections. It has also replaced the original shelf labels with E-ink shelf labels. The new location has the new shelf labels, which display information such as star rating, number of reviews, the regular price, and the price for Amazon Prime members.

Counting a Nashville location that has been announced but is still under construction, Amazon now has 21 Amazon Books bookstores. The retailer also has experimented with mall kiosks, a general retail store called Amazon 4-star, and a cashier-less convenience store called Amazon Go. It also recently opened its first non-Whole Foods Market grocery store in Los Angeles.

Amazon purchased Whole Foods in 2017 for $13.7 billion.
