B&N fired back at Amazon about the battery life
I just got an email from a pr contact with Barnes and Noble. They know what Amazon did today and they’re not taking it lying down.
I was sent the following quote:
With up to two months on a single charge, the All-New NOOK has the longest-battery life in the industry and superior battery performance to Kindle 3. In our side-by-side tests, under the exact same conditions, continuous use of the device resulted in more than two times Kindle’s battery life. While reading at one page a minute, the All-New NOOK battery lasts for 150 hours where the Kindle battery, using the same page-turn rate, lasts for only 56 hours (both with Wi-Fi off). We’ve also done a continuous page turn test and at one page turn per second, the All-New NOOK offers more than 25,000 continuous page turns on a single charge.
-Jamie Iannone, President of Barnes & Noble Digital Products
According to B&N, the new Nook has 3 times the practical battery life of the K3. B&N pretty much called Amazon a liar for manipulating the battery life claims.
Oh, this promises to be so much fun!

It is kind of like watching a playground shoving match, isn’t it?

Yes, but it’s more fun!

Let’s get this straight…30 minutes per day x 60 days = 30 hours. They’re saying that a Nook 2 battery can last 25,000 page turns. Are they saying an average user is going to read over 800 pages PER HOUR? These numbers don’t make sense…

Their footnote now reads "Battery life depends on device settings, individual usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific units; actual results may vary." I don’t see 30 minutes per day usage any more. Interesting.

There’s also the standby time, which slowly eats away at the battery life.

A charged battery is a leaky bucket, this is true. Once an impartial reviewer gets a Nook 2, I’m sure he or she will run some comparisons as well. I don’t want to doubt B&N’s veracity, but 25,000 page turns on one battery charge sounds…a bit unlikely. We shall see. 🙂

Pages turned is going to depend on the type of file being displayed as well as the firmware.
Plenty of room for hijinks as attested to by the benchmark tweaks of graphic card drivers.
(For all we know, the nook firmware lets you turn a page without fully rendering it and kindle’s doesn’t. Or they disabled the eink page scrub/black flash to reduce the amount of work done by the nook.)
Given their earlier bit of puffery I’m not inclined to buy their new claims.
Fool me once and all that.
All B&N really needs to do is quote the capacity of their battery and let educated consumers judge.

You’re correct, disabling the e-ink page scrub would make a huge difference. It wouldn’t be a fair comparison though. If true, it won’t be a PR win for B&N…just the opposite.

If the Nook 2 could function in real life without the page scrub, and the Kindle can’t, it certainly IS a fair comparison, and a B&N win.
Timothy Wilhoit May 25, 2011 um 10:29 pm
If it turns out the N2 has ghosting issues, I don’t think that would be a win. We’ll find out once the device has been evaluated.

Whatever. Amazon will be around in 5 or 10 years, can B&N say the same?

Page turns doesn’t = book pages. You can make print bigger so that you may do 3-4 page turns per book page. that said, my kindle lasted 3 weeks reading a minimum of 2-3 hours a day and was still NOT dead when I charged it. I read on largest print so that is a lot of page turns. MY NC gets about 5 hours, 1st ed nook gets me about 3 DAYS< total reading time of 6-9 HOURS.
