What Halloween is about

What Halloween is about

Halloween is derived from "All Hallows' Eve" (the evening before All Saints' Day) and refers to the night when we currently celebrate Halloween.

There is a long history behind the custom as we know it today. Some people believe that Halloween is related to the Celtic festival Samhain, where the physical and the spirit world come together and spirits and human beings can communicate with each other.

Halloween in the Past: History and Tradition

The celebration of Halloween is originally a Celtic tradition and is believed to be 2,500 years old. The Celts, who lived in central Europe, believed at the time that on this evening the dead would come back to earth to visit their loved ones.

They carried lights to show the spirits the way. At that time the festival was called "Samhain" (the Gaelic word for "November"). The culture of the Celts is extinct, but the festival survived because the Irish adopted the custom.

However, they were afraid of the dead. For this reason, they dressed up in creepy masks to keep the spirits at bay and scare them away. In the Middle Ages, the tradition then became a Christian custom and was set for the evening before All Saints' Day.

Catholic Irish people immigrated to the U.S. and Canada in the 19th century. They retained the traditions of the festival and expanded it. Thus, the tradition became fully established and carried back over to Europe in the 1990s, where it is mixed with native customs.

Halloween Today: Trick or Treat

For Halloween, children go trick-or-treating in disguise and ring doorbells in their neighborhoods. Saying "Trick or treat" (meaning "Give us candy or we’ll trick you"), they ask for candy while threatening to play a prank if there is none.

Popular pranks when there is no candy in the house include wrapping the house with toilet paper or throwing eggs at it. Many households buy extra candy on Halloween to please the wandering children and to prevent themselves from being pranked.

The Date of Halloween

Halloween is always celebrated on the night before All Saints Day, which is the night of October 31 to November 1. For the Celts, who celebrated this custom 2,500 years ago, this day was the end of the year. Summer was officially bidden farewell and winter was welcomed.

Halloween Costumes
