How to Add Android Market to Polaroid PMID702C

There are many many budget tablets on the market,  all with about the same specs and performance. Given that there’s not much to distinguish them (other than appearance), about the only way to choose among them is whether you can install Android Market and how well a tablet can run the apps you need.

This particular  tablet just arrived on the market this week, and as part of my plan to install Android Market on all my tablet I immediately tried my usual easy to follow instructions for installing Android Market. They worked.

Note that this isn’t  a set of instructions on how to hack the tablet; I’m only interested in achieving a certain minimum level of ability with the least work required.

Like the numerous other tablets I have hacked, installing Android Market was a straightforward process. All I did was repeat the steps listed in this post. It didn’t go quite the same way but the process achieved the goal.

  1. Download this ZIP file to your computer.
  2. Open the Zip file to your computer and copy the contents to a folder on your Polaroid tablet via a USB cable. Then unplug your tablet.
  3. Once you’ve done that, open the file manager on your tablet and go to the folder where you put the files. Try to install the following apps in this order (double click on the files in order to run them):
  • OneTimeInitializer-signed.apk
  • SetupWizard.apk
  • vending-3.1.3-signed.apk

As a 4th step you might want to press the home button, select the checkmark which says "open always with", and then select Launcher. This will guarantee that whenever you press the home button you will see the home screen and not be prompted with a menu.

Update: Does your tablet run Android 4.0 or above? Are you feeling lucky? Then you might want to try to install the file labeled "JB Play Store". This is a later version of the Play Store.  It only runs on Android 4.0 and above, and it doesn’t always work, but if you can successfully install it you will have a complete version of Google Play.

I have Aldiko and the Google Apps installed and they work fine. Note that I don’t have the Google videos working on the tablet and I have no way to test it due to the simple fact that I don’t buy my videos via Google Play.

Me to, im having the same problem. i can’t fix it.

Shanna 28 December, 2012 um 1:15 am

Just tried this, and it will let me browse through all the apps and books, but also gives the prompt that unfortunately the market has closed when I try to purchase anything.

Nate Hoffelder 29 December, 2012 um 12:09 am

I’d recommend that you reboot the tablet. If that doesn’t help do a factory reset. And then try the process again.

Sady 24 December, 2012 um 5:09 pm

Yea you can make a phone call we call it skype

Greg 26 December, 2012 um 9:39 pm

Besides skype, which works,
You should be able to make calls over Google Voice. Android 4.0 fixes
bugs in the 2.3 version. On a PC it is the gmail.com and the chat app, not
really google voice which wants to conference an existing cell. On android
the app for Google Voice should allow a chat but really a call over to any
usa based number. FREE.

When done the market is avail…but it’s not google play… And can’t get Netflix at all on here just a bunch of Netflix apps that have nothing to do with watching vids from my account

Nicolas 3 December, 2012 um 11:41 pm

Hi,

I install all the 3 apps, however when I open either the market or google play, it closes the app immediately. My tablet does not let me access the app.
Why?

Thanks

It might work. I don’t know.

Reeces Cowie 28 July, 2013 um 11:31 pm

So I have the poloroid pmid70x and I rebooted and factory restored but I still get the market error when I try to open it. Is threre something else I have to download for this tablet? Or am I just screwed? lol You seem pretty knowledgable (and obviously Im tablet retarded) so if you could help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks

Skee 10 June, 2012 um 12:30 pm

There are 5 different .APK files in that .zip. Should I use all of them, or just the three you listed?

Nate Hoffelder 10 June, 2012 um 12:46 pm

Just the 3 listed. I use the same ZIP for a number of different devices. Some require a 4th APK, and I have the 5th one in there because that’s how I received it. It might be useful one day, so I left it in.

Skee 10 June, 2012 um 12:48 pm

Works great! Thanks!

JM 27 July, 2012 um 12:17 pm

Hi,

I followed your instructions on adding Google Play to my Polaroid Tablet. Mine is a PMID703C however. Worked fine however I kept getting the pop up everytme I pushed the home button. I no longer get the pop up asking which app to use when pressing the home button, but the home button doesn’t bring up the Home screen anymore. Is it possible the wrong app got selected as default? Any ideas on how I can fix this? Thanks!

Azurus Nova 16 November, 2012 um 2:58 am

I’m having the same issue as well.
If someone knows the fix to this, this would solve the only problem I am having with this neat little budget tablet.
I am also not getting the lock screen when I wake the device.

I have the UTAB71 Uniden 7 inch tablet here.

If anyone knows the fix, let us know please!

digical 18 November, 2012 um 7:44 pm

Uninstall the first two apps. Then when you touch or click the home keys select launcher and always use. I use zeam launcher from the market on all my droids.

Satch 1 January, 2013 um 9:36 pm

I installed the Google play per the instructions and everything works fine…EXCEPT my Home buttons are not functional anymore. I have to use the back button to get to home page. What can I do to fix this? I have the Polaroid 704

Nate Hoffelder 1 January, 2013 um 9:39 pm

This happens to a small number of tablets.

Do a factory reset. This will restore the button. Then try the hack again.

Satch 2 January, 2013 um 6:16 pm

BINGO…..Thanks

skyatch 4 April, 2013 um 8:48 pm

What’s the name of the first two apps in the app manager? I can’t find them to uninstall them.

Bonnie 2 October, 2012 um 2:15 pm

Laura 12 June, 2012 um 12:51 pm

Your instructions worked beautifullyfor the Android Market apps but how did you load apps from the Amazon appstore app? When I try to load one, this is what happens: I touch the "appstore" icon on the list of pre-loaded apps.
Up comes a list of a bunch of apps.
I touch one that I’d like to download (e.g. Angry Birds for free).
The app comes up with a description and a Free button.
I touch the "Free" button.
The button changes to "Get App."
I touch the Get App button.
The download starts but immediately I get a message saying, "There was an error purchasing Angry Birds Free. Please click here to add a credit card to your account (this will open your browser) and try again."
So I click on the "here" and it opens my amazon.com account I’ve had with amazon.com for years.
I sign in there.
Then I try to download the app but it doesn’t do it. I just end up with the same error message.
I’ve tried this sequence numerous times. What am I doing wrong? Is the appstore app not loaded? If so, how do I load it?
Help!!!

Uncle jed 13 June, 2012 um 8:41 pm

Laura, hit the skip signing in button (n the lower left side)when setting up the amazon store to get to the free apps or conversely you have to have a credit card attached or an amazon gift card atached to your amazon account if you wish to purchase apps from them.

David Laraway 14 June, 2012 um 2:15 am

Laura,
Check to see if your Amazon Account has the "one-click purchase" turned on and your credit card is set as the payment source for that. You need that set that way to get the apps (free or otherwise) from the Amazon App Store.

belengarya 17 June, 2012 um 4:27 pm

if you have an account w amazon its no problem. they use your "on file" method of payment to charge you if you buy a paid app. easy peasy…no checkout hassles!

Locked myself out of my Polaroid 702c how do I get past the lock code??

N4RPS 14 June, 2012 um 7:45 pm

Hello!

You must reflash your tablet with the factory-installed software to recover from this condition. Since face recognition is supported on this tablet, using that feature is a good way to avoid this in the future.

THIS TIME, they have the firmware on their website for people to do this:

http://southerntelecom.com/polaroidsupport/firmware/

Download and install per their instructions, and you should be fine.

You are such a life saver! I bought my son a Polaroid PMID702C which does not support Google Play, which I have on all of my devices. I thought I may have made a mistake in buying it because it wanted me to dl from Amazon, of which I am not too fond. I did a search and found your site. The directions were straightforward and easy to understand and implement! Thank you so much!

Chris Crochet 2 September, 2012 um 2:28 pm

Process for installing Google Play worked like a champ! Now my son has all the games I have on my Droid X — and they all work swimmingly! Getting this little gem of a tablet was the best $60 I’ve ever spent!!

And your advice on installing Google Play completed the picture. Thanks again!

lyndcey 2 September, 2012 um 3:16 pm

Thank you very much, I was really frustrated with this tablet. Your awesome!

Chris_P 2 September, 2012 um 8:17 pm

This also works on the PMID703C. I only had to use the three apps listed, neither one of the additional apk’s was needed.

The OS thinks that one of them is a launcher, so it will ask you what you want to do when you press the home key after you do the install. Choose the other "launcher" and check the "do not ask me again" option so you only have to do it once.

Thanks to the OP for the post and files.

grant 13 September, 2012 um 4:40 pm

It says problem with parsing package? can i make it download it by hacking it or something?

Mel 16 September, 2012 um 4:35 pm

I have a shirt pocket size Polaroid tablet PMID4300 (4GB) that I also purchased from Big Lots a few weeks ago.
This device is also missing the Google Shop play-store white shopping bag icon. Someone directed me to this page, and I tried the zip download, decompressed the files on my PC, then transferred all the files to a folder on the 32Gb SD card.
Just a note, the zip contains 6 files:
GoogleServiceFramework-signed.apk
JB_Play_Store.apk
OneTimeInitializer-signed.apk
SetupWizard-signed.apk
Talk-signed.apk
vending-3.1.3-signed.apk
Your instructions say to transfer all the files, but only say to install 3 of the files in this order:
>1 OneTimeInitializer-signed.apk
>2 SetupWizard-signed.apk
>3 Vending-3.1.3-signed.apk
After transferring the files to the SD, I unplugged the USB cable which dismounts the PC from the card and allows the tablet to mount it.
I tried to install the first file, and all I get is:
[Parse error] There is a problem parsing the package.
… So What’s up with that?
All the files give that message.
I even tried re-booting.

Nate Hoffelder 16 September, 2012 um 5:57 pm

That error message is usually due to an incompatibility between the version of Android which your gadget is running and the version of Android that the app requires before it can be installed.

Jolyn 16 September, 2012 um 5:31 pm

I’m also getting the parse error. I really want this to work.

Brooke 16 September, 2012 um 10:44 pm

I have a Polaroid Internet Tablet T7 PTAB7200 -I received it as a gift at Christmas, I believe it was bought at Kohl’s around Black Friday. I was frustrated too when I realized I was restricted from downloading apps I wanted.
I am glad I found this info- The first two files didn’t work for me- it kept saying
"There is a problem parsing the package."
like others have stated above. So when I tapped on the last file (vending…) I was expecting the error msg. but instead it asked me if I wanted to install! 🙂
Thank you, I really appreciate it

Brooke 16 September, 2012 um 10:52 pm

Oh by the way- I am not very techy… and I didn’t get this on the first try trust me. I played around for about an hour with this. It would not work when I transferred the files to an SD. I had to use my USB cable and I transferred the files from this site to my actual Internal Storage. I put them in my download app. I figure later I can delete it if I need more space- I’ll have the files on my computer, if ever needed again.
Anyways for those of you having the error msg. maybe try saving the files to your internal storage rather than a SD card? Just a thought.

Chris 6 November, 2012 um 10:10 am

I am able to install all of the steps just fine but then when I go into Market it says I must add an account first. I have added an email account, Facebook, another email account but to no avail? I have had android devices before and have never had this issue? Has anyone else has this happen and if so what is the fix and/or what type of account am I supposed to add?

Nate Hoffelder 6 November, 2012 um 10:20 am

You have to add a Google account. Generally it is [email protected]

If you added one then try rebooting.

Jennifer 7 November, 2012 um 2:03 pm

This worked perfect!!! My son got a Polaroid tablet and it was very frustrating not being able to get the Android apps for Market (Play). This took me less than five minutes. Thank you so much!

Screamy 13 November, 2012 um 5:18 pm

I just purchased the Uniden 7 inch tablet (model UTAB71) from Big Lots ($69.99) and the Google Market install files and instructions listed here worked perfectly for me.

Afterwards, I copied an MKV version of the kid’s movie "Bolt" to the tablet and it plays back crystal-clear and fills the wide-aspect display perfectly. I haven’t tried an MP4 yet, but if an MKV plays okay, MP4 is shoe-in.

This is an amazing little tablet for the money..

Adam M 13 November, 2012 um 9:00 pm

I have followed your instructions and got 2 of the tablets to work fine…However I have a PTAB7XC I have been doing this process to…On this third tablet that I have , after completing the process I get an error that says Unfortunately, Android Market has stopped….How do I get this to go away….I have also completed the google account setup as well without any problems…I even tried clearing the cache in the apps optuions and tried rebooting the android market app and got the same results. I’m stuck and still researching the net for other ideas…

I got the same message on my Uniden tablet, to fix it I uninstalled all versions of the play store and reinstalled using the file that I downloaded from my computer and it worked perfectly

What file did you download from your computer and where did you find it?

Ariel 27 November, 2012 um 4:52 pm

I get the same error. I have always gotten that error when I attempted to use Market or the Play Store .apk in that .zip file. Restarting did nothing, uninstalling did nothing. It’s just not working for me. In the background, I can see that it’s trying to work. I see the terms of use screen and sometimes it logs me in and notifies me of the two app updates I need to take care of but the error message is on top of all that and I can’t get to it. It’s maddening.

john 20 December, 2012 um 11:03 pm

I have a PTAB7XC and get the UNFORTUNATELY, MARKET HAS STOPPED.
Not sure if it’s the same issue causing this, but when trying check for updates in the About Tablet section I get"Check failed! Please check your network! My browser and email work fine so no network issue, but something seems to be blocking the connection to the market and update apps.
I originally had a PMID701x and installing the 3 files worked fine, but with this PTAB7XC it’s just not working.

Eric Wadsworth 25 December, 2012 um 3:19 pm

Yeah, I’m getting that error when trying to do an OTA update on a PTAB8000: "Check Failed! Please check your network!", and the network is fine.

This install of Google Market worked great. However, 2 things…I downloaded the Netflix app through the market and Amazon App Store but it will not open. The screen blinks and returns to my app screen. I have the Uniden UTAB71. Also, somewhat unrelated, the southern telecom website does not list the UTAB71 on it as a device. When I click on software update on my tablet, it quickly says unknown error. Any suggestions?

Bob 19 November, 2012 um 1:47 am

You need to install version of Netflix 1.8.1 for it to work. Also set your netflix settings to display at "good or better, but not best". Go to the following website and scroll down to the last post by member named schmappel. Click on the link he supplies from dropbox. Then download and install Netflix 1.8.1.

Derrick 19 November, 2012 um 7:45 am

Works great, thanks! Question though. Can you install the newer version of Google Play after getting this up and running? Since it’s working, I’ve left it alone but I’ve seen newer versions of the google play APK. Just curious. Thanks again!

BDC 20 November, 2012 um 2:34 am

If it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it. Read some of the comments on many apps on Play Store and you will find that they work on some tablets and not on others. Some will say the upgrades made it worse than older versions which worked well. I noticed this with some of the you tube upgrades and had to find older versions on line. I think the Polaroid tablets and Emerson EM543 are one in the same as they use are both listed on google search in the southerntelecom website and identical in format except Polaroid has firmware updates for a variety of models and Emerson only has the EM543.
Re: Google Play, under FAQs in both sites:
"•We find that the Google Android market caters mainly to smartphones. Polaroid Tablet users can download apps by downloading the Amazon App Store application or by loading .apk files directly onto the device using the preloaded "ApkInstaller" which is located in your tablet’s app menu."

Bud 19 November, 2012 um 11:57 am

Just did this on the Polaroid PMID800. Took about five minutes. Works great. Got it at Walgreen’s, not a bad price.

dave hulett 19 November, 2012 um 9:29 pm

Just used these instructions to load goggle play onto a Uniden tablet that I bought at Big Lots for $60. It looks identical to the Poloride model, which they actually had for $48, but were sold out by the time I got there. Thanks!

Greg 20 November, 2012 um 12:19 pm

According to what I have found, it IS identical. Both are made and supported by Southern Telecom – only the branding is different.

BTW, the Polaroid tablet that was on sale this week for $44.88 was only 4.3″, so you didn’t miss anything!

Greg 20 November, 2012 um 12:22 pm

Just wanted to note that that I bought the identical tablet branded as Uniden at Big Lots on Sunday – it is on sale this week for $58.88. The model number is UTAB71, also made by Southern Telecom.

I was able to install Android Marketplace per your instructions but, for some reason, I am having trouble with Chrome – it stops with an error popup as soon as I start it. Has anyone been able to get Chrome running on their tablet, Polaroid or Uniden?

Randy 2 January, 2013 um 4:57 pm

Same situation for me. Looking for possible solutions.

Randy 2 January, 2013 um 5:01 pm

Oh, forgot to mention. I have the PMID1000 (10 inch one my wife bought for me at Kohls black Friday). I got the google play to work with these instructions. It kept crashing google play at first, but it seems to have become very stable over the past week. Only thing that hangs it up is surfing the internet. The stock brower is always saying "web page is non responsive" you have the option to "wait" which almost always works, the website will fully open in a few seconds…….. very very annoying. I think Chrome would help this problem.

Lisa 22 January, 2013 um 7:48 pm

Hi Randy, did you get a response to the browser issue? I’m encountering the same problem and it’s fustrating. Thanks.

Rylan 30 December, 2013 um 7:26 pm

I’m just fixing up a UTAB71 by Uniden (rebranded Southern Telecom) and getting Chrome working was at first a hitch, installing from a browser based Google Play Store session it was trying to send me an Ubuntu 64 bit version. Once I was able to get the old Android Market working on this thing (see note at bottom) I was able to download a working version of Chrome through the now installed Market app (although I first had to delete all app data from the market no less than twice in the system menu>apps).

(Note: I was able to install the new com.android.vending-4.4.22.apk but it crashes once you sign in with your google account so I had to downgrade to an old "Market" version posted in this thread.)

Also lost the functionality of the home button on the side and icon on the bottom, any fix? thanks for letting me use google,
mike

Nate Hoffelder 20 November, 2012 um 11:54 pm

Reboot the tablet, and if that doesn’t help do a factory reset (it’s under the settings menu) and try again.

Satch 2 January, 2013 um 6:19 pm

Nate…thanks….you saved my home button problem by factory reset and installing again

Chris Castellon 21 November, 2012 um 9:37 am

I followed you instructions for this and loaded google play with no trouble as well THANKS!, however I downloaded Angry Birds and when you try to launch it the tablet goes black and freezes. I have two of these as Xmas gifts for my boys and would like to have their favorites loaded on before they open them. Any help would be great!

Chris Castellon 21 November, 2012 um 9:38 am

FYI – mine are the Uniden UTAB-71

LoTech 1 January, 2013 um 11:46 pm

Chris, I bought 3 of the Uniden UTAB71 as Christmas presents for my kids. One of them had the same issue you describe with all the Angry Birds apps. Also the Home key would no longer send it to the home screen. After several other attempts to uninstall and reinstall various apps, I did as other users had suggested and reset the device to the original factory settings by going to the Settings > Backup & Reset menu.

This will wipe all apps and user data from your tablet so you will have to start over with your setup, but following this, it performs flawlessly.

kelly 21 November, 2012 um 6:21 pm

Seriously, you ROCK!!! Followed the instructions and it worked the FIRST TIME!! My birthday girl is VERY happy:)
Thanks!

Mike B 21 November, 2012 um 10:57 pm

Brilliant!!! I recently purchased 2 Uniden UTAB71 tablets for Xmas gifts. I was about to return them because of not being able to load new apps on them. So glad I found this walkthru! Followed step by step and had both tablets downloading games in less than 10 minutes. Thank you so much!! My son and daughter are gonna love there Christmas gifts!

ryan 22 November, 2012 um 9:18 am

This may be a silly question. Buy I am driving myself crazy. How. Do you get into the file manager on the uniden tablet I purchaed from big lots. I can transfer the files fine, but then cannot find them to install. Thanks in advance for any help

Nate Hoffelder 22 November, 2012 um 9:37 am

Do you mean that you are looking for a file manager? Here’s one I like:
http://www.estrongs.com/en/download.html

If you’re stumped about finding the files after you’ve transferred them, the trick is to use a distinctive folder. For example, there’s usually just one Download folder and it is usually quite easy to find both in the file manager I linked to as well as when you have the Android tablet plugged in over USB.

Don 28 November, 2012 um 7:11 pm

Nate I have a Uniden UTAB71. I downloaded the Google play zip file on to my computer. Uncompressed them. Sent them to the tablet. They were stored on the tablets memory. Showed all 6 files. I installed these 3 in the order you suggested. OneTimeInitializer-signed.apk, SetupWizard.apk , vending-3.1.3-signed.apk. I couldn’t find them ord any app for Google play. I then moved the folder with the 6 files to the SD card. Then tried to install them again. It ask me if I wanted to replace each and I did. I still can’t find the app, or am I suppose to look for something else? I have powered down and back up.

Sorry 1st tablet
Don

Nate Hoffelder 28 November, 2012 um 7:31 pm

It should say Android Market, not Google Play.

I don’t have this tablet at all and I don’t have any similar tablets handy, but I can make a suggestion.

If you cannot find an icon in the apps menu which says Market or Android Market, look in the upper right corner of that menu. If the installation worked then I’m pretty sure you should have a new option in that corner which says, Shop, Store, or something. I seem to recall that Android 3.0 and above puts the link to the Android Market in that corner.

Don 28 November, 2012 um 9:29 pm

Nate, you are absolutely correct. There was a market app and there was a Shop app in the upper right corner. It’s working fine. I’m sorry, I had Google on my mind. I don’t know what people like myself would do with out people like you. I really appreciate your help! Thanks again!

ryan 22 November, 2012 um 10:32 am

I transferred the files to the download folder on the tablet. Now I cannot figure out how to view them to install them

Nate Hoffelder 22 November, 2012 um 2:22 pm

Does your tablet have a file manager? Some don’t.

What tablet is it?

When you open the file manager app what do you see? Please describe it.

Better yet, email the following link to yourself. On that page you will find an install file for a file manager which is easy to use.
http://www.estrongs.com/en/download.html

ryan 22 November, 2012 um 3:42 pm

Thanks Nate for your help. I installed the file manager and everything worked perfectly

Catherine 22 November, 2012 um 10:16 pm

I downloaded it and it works great except it will not let me download books is there something else that i need to do to be able to read books on my tablet?

Nate Hoffelder 23 November, 2012 um 7:17 am

That is such an open-ended question that I am not sure how to answer it.

Download ebooks from where? In what format?

Val 22 November, 2012 um 11:34 pm

matthew 23 November, 2012 um 6:30 am

i have the Android market icon but when i open it it says Must Add account and when i press yes, it just closes to the main screen… And there is no Gmail built in app just a general email one. How do u fix that ?

Nate Hoffelder 23 November, 2012 um 7:12 am

Try installing the Google Services Framework APK file which I included in the ZIP file. Then reboot the tablet.

Katie 23 November, 2012 um 12:24 pm

I purchased the Polaroid PMID1000, I followed your instructions and was bale to get the market place. However, if I try to download something it says "Unfortunately, Market has stopped."

Please help!

Nate Hoffelder 23 November, 2012 um 12:50 pm

All I can suggest is that you reboot the tablet. If that doesn’t work then you can try a factory reset and then install the files again.

Sorry, but sometimes this just doesn’t work.

Joe 23 November, 2012 um 2:28 pm

It appears the PMID1000 is discontinued. Personally as a Linux enthusiast I might buy one for experimentation, but if you are dependent on the Android user interface part of it, and it isn’t working out for you, you might consider returning it.

Jason 23 November, 2012 um 4:44 pm

I purchased a Polaroid Pmid 1000b, and am trying to install google play, i have followed the instructions as far as downloading the zip files and transferring them. I got the google play icon but when I click on it, i just get a message that says unfortunately google play store has stopped working. any suggestions? Thanks. If it seems that it may not work for this specific tablet, any suggestions on here I can get free apps?

Nate Hoffelder 23 November, 2012 um 5:03 pm

There’s a report elsewhere in this blog from someone else who bought this tablet. She couldn’t get this hack to work either.

For apps, you could try the Amazon Appstore or 1Mobile. The latter is pretty good but not completely licit.

I tried downloading the files as stated above and even found the updated apk file for the play store http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390135922294521859 But still can not get it to open on either. Both say unfortunately market or android have stopped working.

Any ideas, hate to have to return both of these to Kohls!

Help!!!!! My tablet won’t even read my sd card so I can’t do anything because it won’t allow me to even download the app store…. HELP!!!!!

Nate Hoffelder 25 November, 2012 um 9:40 pm

Either the card is corrupted or the card slot is broken. Did you check the card on another device?

Try rebooting the tablet and reinserting the card (while the tablet is asleep, not awake).

If that doesn’t help then the card slot is broken.

Patrick 25 November, 2012 um 10:36 pm

Installed beautifully, but I seem to be getting held up when I click into the Market app. It asks if I’d like to add an account on this device. Whether I click yes or no, the app crashes back to the prior screen. Suggestions?

I’m running a Nextbook Next8P12 on ICS 4.0.4

Patrick 25 November, 2012 um 10:59 pm

And I’m an idiot. You need to add a GMAIL account to the device prior to that. My bad.

Patrick 26 November, 2012 um 12:02 am

Nope, I lied. Still having the same issues. Thoughts?

Patrick 26 November, 2012 um 12:27 pm

I’m able to install Google Play or Android Market from the files. Both crash immediately UNLESS I install the Google Service Framework APK that came in the zip. If I do that, then I get as far as the Google Sign-in process, at which point I get one of two messages:

From Android Market: "Android Service has Stopped"

From Google Play: "Cannot establish reliable connection to server"

Insight? Thoughts?

Hi Nate, It looks like I am getting the same results: "Unfortunately Market has stopped". I have a PTAB8000. Has anyone else had success getting this to work? I also installed the googleservices.apk to allow me to enter account settings. It accepts me email and password, I get the finish button and then get the message. Have tried restarting, uninstalling and reinstalling files to no avail. Any thoughts to what I may be doing wrong? Does it matter which order I install the googleservices.apk? Thanks in advance for any help!

I have no idea how to get the files off my computer to my tablet. I can download the files onto a USB, but my tablet only has a hole for a mini USB. My computer doesn’t have a hole for a mini USB. Make sense?

Nate Hoffelder 1 December, 2012 um 4:02 pm

The tablet probably came with a cable that has a mini USB on one end and a regular USB on the other. I’d be surprised if you cannot find one in the box.

You could also buy a cable at Radio Shack or some other electronics store.

Anne 1 December, 2012 um 4:06 pm

Unrelated but, this tablet sees my 8gb sd card as a 2gb sd card. Took it back and exchanged for a new one. Same issue.

Bob 9 December, 2012 um 10:45 pm

So far this seems like a great tablet. We’ve had it for a week, and only one problem so far.

When I load videos onto a micro SDHC card, and insert it, the video player I installed (SuperPlayer) won’t recognize it. It only "sees" the videos on the tablet’s internal memory.

But I know that the micro SDHC card works – because when I look using the File Explorer, all the videos are there, and I can access the contents, and play the videos that way. But this is awkward and frustrating for my young child.

How can I get the regular apps to see the contents of the SD card? Do I have to create a directory with special name? Do I need to download an app to format this card in a certain way?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

If it matters, this is the video player that I am trying to use.

Bob 10 December, 2012 um 12:18 am

Huh, I fixed it. The problem was the software…SuperPlayer can’t seem to read the SD card. But other video players, like MoboPlayer and QQPlayer can, so I downloaded these onto the tablet, and played around with the settings, until I could get them to find the SD card. Then I had them re-scan/refresh, and each of these video players found all of the videos!
It now works perfectly!

Looking for mods to overclock and to change the looks, feel and speed. Can anyone help

Thomas 12 December, 2012 um 12:47 am

I wouldn’t recommend trying to overclock a Polaroid. If this uses the same processor as my Pmid701, it can be theoretically overclocked to 1.5GHz , but will almost certainly be unstable at any speed over 1.0GHz. Tablets just don’t have any spare cooling capacity. Try running any demanding game, and see how warm your tablet gets without overclocking.

If you decide to try it, I’ve heard that you can use an app called SetCPU. You may need to fully root your tablet first. As I understand it, the Polaroids are shipped partially rooted, enough to run most apps, but some things need more access.

Cindy 12 December, 2012 um 9:42 pm

I have a Craig 10.1 inch tablet model 745 e. I have been so frustrated with no access to Android market. It comes with Getjar and Slide me market and I hated it. I used this process to add Android market and it worked! So far anyway. I’ve only added one app but seems to be working fine. Your detailed instructions were wonderful. Only thing different with running the files is that the first one, One time initializer, my tablet said that it was a duplicate file. so I ran the other two. all is good. Thank you so much!

Thomas 16 December, 2012 um 9:47 pm

From what I’ve been reading, this method will not work on newer Polaroid tablets. The newer tablets like the 703C and 705X and 10C do not have rooted firmware, so to add the market requires using custom firmware.

You can get Livesuite images of modified firmware for these tablets here:

http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?3014-Modifed-Polaroid-Stock-Custom-ROM-Live-Suite-Image-links&p=40951#post40951

I haven’t tried this myself, I don’t have one of these models. Before trying this, I strongly recommend downloading the official firmware from Southern Telecom for a backup and reading the instructions for flashing firmware carefully.

Nate Hoffelder 16 December, 2012 um 9:54 pm

I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the usefulness of this trick.

There are reports that this worked on those later models, including the 703c and 705. You can find those reports as comments on this post.

Thomas 16 December, 2012 um 10:21 pm

According to what I read on Freaktab, the early 703Cs had rooted firmware, so it may have worked initially, but now they’ve changed the firmware on the newer ones. If you do have one where this works, make sure not to update your firmware.

Go to the Google Play help pages and type in the specific error message:

Chances are they will have a set of steps to fix it.

If that doesn’t help, Google the message you receive. This probably has a simple solution.

And yes, you need to unzip the files.

I tried using your instructions to add the market. When everything was completed I tried resetting my polaroid pmid703c and now it wont turn on. It just keeps replaying the polaroid icon over and over. Any ideas how to fix this??

Thank you so much! I bought this for my son for Christmas and he was starting to get bummed because of the limitations. I felt like the hero for my son this morning because of your simple instructions. Usually he shakes his head at me for my limited knowledge on new gadgets. Thank you sooooo much!

Nadine 26 December, 2012 um 5:26 pm

Great fix! Thanks so much! Saved me a return of 2 Proscan devices purchased for our kids. Easy instructions!

Has anyone here been able to get any of the Angry Birds to work on the polaroid PMID705.

I can download it from the Google Play store, it says it installs ok. When I go to play it I just get a dark screen like it freezes up. Any one……..Please help.

LoTech 2 January, 2013 um 1:47 pm

I had the same issue with the Uniden tablet. Also the Home key would no longer send it to the home screen. After several other attempts to uninstall and reinstall various apps, I did as other users had suggested and reset the device to the original factory settings by going to the Settings > Backup & Reset menu.

This will wipe all apps and user data from your tablet so you will have to start over with your setup, but following this, it performs flawlessly.

sean 27 December, 2012 um 8:58 pm

Hey has anyone ever experience any trouble doing this? I just want to be sure before my brother goes through with it.

Nate Hoffelder 27 December, 2012 um 10:36 pm

The worst that could happen is that you would have to do a factory reset. That’s no big deal.

Satch 2 January, 2013 um 8:51 pm

I recently performed a factory reset because my home buttons would not work. Yes, it cleans anything you have added but follow Nate’s instructions exact. I am pleased to say Everything is working now including play store which was my main attempt.

Heidi 28 December, 2012 um 12:58 pm

How do I transfer the file from the computer to the tablet? I have the USB cable plugged in but I can’t figure it out. I don’t know if Windows 8 is throwing me for a loop or what.

Karl 28 December, 2012 um 3:10 pm

Got a Pmid705 for ourselves this Xmas for the heck of it. Looked at the Kindle, but heard the internet was terrible on it. Samsung looked amazing, but we went cheap.

Found these instructions while doing some quick research on the tablet. Got it home, linked it up with my computer and it worked perfectly. I’ve downloaded Angry Birds Star Wars and a couple other more useful apps and they have worked great.

Thanks Nate for posting this and for the easy instructions.

Jaytee 28 December, 2012 um 4:30 pm

Is anyone having issues with the touch screen on their Polaroid tablets. My tablet seems to be unresponsive sometimes on certain areas of the screen. The solution sometimes is that I have to flip the unit around which is very frustrating.

Nate Hoffelder 28 December, 2012 um 4:41 pm

Some tablets have hardware defects. It happens.

Jaytee 28 December, 2012 um 4:32 pm

By the way I have the Polaroid PMID 800

David 28 December, 2012 um 8:57 pm

I just used this method on my new Eclipse-X or x-extreme tablet from Sear. Works well except that the prompt for launcher or setup wizard when you try to go to the home page. You just choose the defaut then the next time no more prompt.Thanks.

Dave 29 December, 2012 um 1:59 pm

I am trying to this on my pmid10c tablet, but when i copy the files to my tablet i can’t find them. When my tablet is connected it opens 2 drives. INTERNAL and another one. I choose internal and choose the documents folder and it says it copies them. when i disconnect the tablet and try to find them they are no where to be found. Suggestions?

Nate Hoffelder 29 December, 2012 um 2:02 pm

Copy the files to the other drive. I’m guessing "internal" could be the OS partition.

Josh 29 December, 2012 um 6:26 pm

I installed the market on my 703c and I keep getting an error that says unfortunately the market has stopped. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks

Amy 29 December, 2012 um 8:29 pm

Ok, So i got the market to show the icon on the polaroid. However, whenI click it, it asks if i want to add an account and then doesn’t do anything. I can’t seem to get it to let me access the market even though I have a gmail address. What am I doing wrong?

angelo 29 December, 2012 um 10:06 pm

you have to uninstall the app when it wont install right. btw all android and iphone/phones dont allow every app to install right the first time. and not every app will run in either device all the time.

mmm 29 December, 2012 um 10:50 pm

I have successfully install led the hack but continue to get an error when trying to sign on to add my gooogle account. It is sayin that it "can’t establish a reliable data connect to the server." I know it is not really a connection problem as I can do everything normally on my polarid tablet. i am wondering if it is an issue with the hack or something else.

Djphase 30 December, 2012 um 3:24 pm

Tried installing on PMID703C with no luck! Same results as everyone else! Installed SlideMe as an alternative to Google Play or I go to Android Drawer(ww.androiddrawer.com) to download apk(Android package files) directly and install them. Let’s face it, Google Pl ay is the best but how many apps do you really need? Find the ones you like on other android sites like the ones mentioned above and have fun!! Polaroid still makes a pretty decent tablet.

If anyone does find out how to fix this on PMID703c then I would still like to know so drop me a line if y0u can..

Thanks

Heather 31 December, 2012 um 11:56 pm

Hi Nate:) You are a genius for all of us who could only afford to buy the less expensive tablets from big lots. It was so easy to install google market thank you so much. I was wondering if you know of any other apps for free music, movies, and books? We bought 8 tablets for us and the kids so any apps for free fun would be appreciated. Happy New Year:)

My google play store keeps shutting down.

Darby 5 January, 2013 um 7:43 pm

Big Lots has a PMID705WH for $69.00

Would that be the 705 everyone is talking about? (The WH stands for white, but I know there are 705x and705BK (BK is also a White Tablet for some strange reason))

I’d like to know if Flash Player works on it and also if Google Play works. I’m seeing that there are hits and misses from the comments, not sure if this is due to a mix up in models such as 705, 705wh, 705bk, 705x.

Nate Hoffelder 5 January, 2013 um 7:51 pm

There is also a Ptab 705, I think. It might not be the same device.

Nicole F 7 January, 2013 um 2:52 am

Francisco Spain 7 January, 2013 um 3:37 am

Dear friend.
THANKS A LOT.
We have already done this to our tablet which is an IT WORKS TM702, seems it is a clone of the Polaroid. The playstore runs slowly , anyway, but maybe because the tablet is a cheap one.
I am having some issues trying to connect one of the tablets with my home wifi, though the other one does.
Any help on that?

Thanks

When I try installing the Google Services Framework APK file which I included in the ZIP file. I get an error : Application not installed: An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed.

Can you please tell me what I need to do at this point? I’ve tried to reboot, uninstall, reinstall…I’m out of ideas.

Thanks

Rob 7 January, 2013 um 9:31 am

Oh I forgot to mention the tablet is a 7″ Proscan

Nate Hoffelder 7 January, 2013 um 9:43 am

First try to install the rest of the APKs and see if Android Market works. If it doesn’t, do a factory reset and repeat the steps.

Rob 7 January, 2013 um 10:34 am

When I’ve installed them, 2 out of the 3 give me the same signature error. When I try to run the market I get the same error everyone else is getting "Unfortunately, Market has stopped.”

Awesome! This process [after a factory reset] took my daughter’s Uniden-7 tablet from worthless-to-her to something she now uses regularly[for instagram mostly]! Worked so well, my brother -in -law wanted the same thing done to his Uniden-7 tablet.

Thank you very much. Now I have one less person using the ipad when I need it. 🙂

Mandi 18 January, 2013 um 9:25 am

Is there a way to update this to google play instead of market?

Thomas 18 January, 2013 um 1:47 pm

Google Play is the market, it just got renamed. If this works like the method I used, it should automatically update itself the first time you run it.

Scott 22 January, 2013 um 1:05 pm

I have a Polaroid PMID705x and wanted Google Play store on it…which I couldn’t get until I read this forum. I downloaded the appropriate .apk files and launched them on the tablet. Seems to be working ok…other than some games that I download gets a window that pops up that reads, Unfortunately the Market has stopped working. Also I purchased Minecraft Pocket Edition and want it downloaded onto my tablet. I logged on to my gmail account from the tablet and all it says is that it will download to the device shortly…that was yesterday. Any advice on how to fix that?

Malcom 29 January, 2013 um 12:08 pm

Thank you! I have used these instructions twice now, once with Polaroid, once with Emerson. This helps us get the most out of our tablets! Thanks!

vash 13 February, 2013 um 9:02 pm

So probably a noob question but i have to ask so i don’t try and root with the wrong setup but is the PMID70x the same or is the PMID702c? If its not the same or is the 702c then can someone tell me what name i should look under to find the root for it, or if anyone just happen to have a link? Doughtful.

Thomas 13 February, 2013 um 10:51 pm

First, this isn’t rooting. If your PMID70x works the same as the 701 and 702 models, it comes partially rooted from the factory. From what I’ve seen, this method works a lot of different tablets, so I’d give it a try.

Fully rooting your tablet is a bit more involved. It usually requires replacing the firmware on your tablet with a custom version. Don’t try this unless you find custom firmware for your exact model number.

I don’t know if your tablet is the same as the 702. I can’t find a listing for a PMID70x anywhere. I’ve seen the 705x and the PTAB7xc, but this must be a new one.

This site has a lot of information and firmwares for the Polaroids:

http://www.freaktab.com/forumdisplay.php?62-Polaroid-Tablets

vash 15 February, 2013 um 2:08 am

yea ive been checking out freaktab good site for sure but yea as hard as I have looked nothing just how to get the market on there but i cant even do that on this using the method above. every time if i reboot or not if i try to install all of em at once or one at a time this tab sucks and it hates me lol. the build is PMID70x.v01.84.20120808. I wonder if the 2012 is the year if so then i wonder what the 0808 is maybe its the 808th Polaroid but prob not since theres a 0 in front of it lol. anyways though i’ve already fully rooted my acer a110 and optimus slider of course the slider is going down hill now and freezing and when i click to call someone ive already called it just sits there and like two mins later it calls and now when i try to restore it it wont do it. when i go to recovery do i need to data reset in the recovery menu before restore i don’t remember lol. so yea if it is new or whatever i really hope someone roots it wish i was more tech savvy. so the real question is is there another way to install the market cuz my tab just i’snt having it i get through all the signing up parts and then before the second time i have to allow access it say unfortunately market has stopped and force closes anyone have another method for installing the market ?

H_Marx 27 February, 2013 um 12:27 pm

Worked OK to install the 3 files as recommeded.

BUT, then Amazon Appstore (previously installed on the Polaroid 702C) stopped working correctly.

After several attempts to power off/on, force-stop/restart the app, clear the "cache", etc., I finally uninstalled Amazon Appstore, reinstalled it, then logged in once again to my Amazon user account.

All is well and both app stores are now working (though it remains to be seen if any other "gotchas" are still lurking!).

Thanks very much for your valuable post! And along with LAN access (provided by "ES File Explorer") to movie files on a networked drive (.AVI, .MP4, .MKV, etc.) , and "MX Player" to view them (and no stuttering!), another world is now open to this little Polaroid. It is proving quite versatile!

p.s. Got some IE Favorites/bookmarks (Windows Internet Explorer .URL files) you’ve transferred/shared with your Android device? Check out "Stuntzurl" in the app store and follow some of the suggestions users have made to get it working (easy to do) — it works great and now web pages open as expected when I click on the URL file.

Now if I can just figure out how to share/export the Android browser bookmarks I’ve created back to a Windows browser… any suggestions?

I have downloaded the file as u instructe but what u mean by usb wire is what i did not understand well.

ms america 7 July, 2013 um 4:32 pm

you are the best!! it is easy as 1-2-3!!!!! i didnt even plug into my computer, it was connected to wifi already, so i downloaded the zip directly on tablet. then installed just the way you said and bam!

Toby 30 July, 2013 um 3:56 pm

This is the dumbest question you will ever get! The universal USB cable that we use for our Android phones didn’t fit into this tablet (for the file transfer). What kind of cable do I need to get???

Nate Hoffelder 30 July, 2013 um 4:01 pm

It depends on the specific model (I’m not sure you have the 702C).

Polaroid tablets all use generic USB cables with one of 2 standard USB plugs. If you don’t have any cables handy that will fit, take the tablet to a computer store. The odds are good that they’ll have a cable that will fit.

Toby 31 July, 2013 um 8:25 pm

Sorry…one more question. I downloaded the zip file to the tablet with a USB cable; disconnected from my computer; opened file manager on the tablet, clicked on gapps.2.3.4.zip but I receive this message "Extract here" and "Extract to…" Have I done something wrong in the transfer of the zip file to the tablet?

Nate Hoffelder 31 July, 2013 um 8:37 pm

It’s better to extract the zip file to your computer and then copy over the files you need.

PTAB8000 Google Play store fix !!!
—————————————————–

I figured out how to do it, but it needs a different approach (as speculated above, the GAPPS zip install will not work on some Polaroid devices). I got the PTAB8000 for my son for christmas, but he was frustrated with it because the app stores Polaroid provides are either crap or flat out don’t work. Google to the rescue ! After ignoring it for almost a year I had some time to research, and behold… I found out that this device needs to be rooted (aka hacked) and then google can be installed. But don’t fret, a few skilled people had mercy and came up with a very easy tool to make it happen.

For this solution you only need your tablet (duh !), a PC or laptop and a USB connection cable.

1) go into your tablet settings. Go all the way down on the settings list, find developer options, and put a checkmark where it says "Debug during USB connection" (or close to that, it should be the first item on the top of the window).

2) connect your tablet to your laptop or PC via the USB/charging cable

3) wait until the device is fully recognized (it should install USB and android drivers)

4) Go to this website: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2066041

5) look for the "Polaroid All in One" download (I used the v2.1b Beta) and install it on your computer. Then run it.

6) When the screen comes up it will tell you what device you have. On the right side, make sure to put checkmarks in root device/install google framework/PTAB8000 Full market fix.

7) Then hit run button, and watch the action. That’s it. The status messages will keep you updated on what is being done to the tablet. DO NOT DISCONNECT until everything is finished. It will restart automatically several times.

8) In the end, the software will install a fully functional Google Play store. Upon restarting you might see some error messages pop up, but as far as I can see they can be ignored. I downloaded several game apps, angry birds, subway surfers, etc and they all work fine.

Note that the tablet has limitations, not every app will work. I tried google chrome and it did not work for me after installing.

Also note that before doing this, I did a complete reset of the tablet (yes, erase all… !!) to make sure there is no junk left that might interfere. The often discussed OTA software update button is junk, for all I know. I have not found any postings from people that had it working. It’s a Polaroid-branded cheapo, let’s face it. Also, the ominous "v2" firmware on the southern telecom webpage is the same as the one on the tablet. After installing the firmware you get the exact same firmware version after looking in the settings page.

I hope this will clear up some of the confusion and frustration with this tablet. It is not the greatest, but it has decent graphics and it is a nice learner/game tablet for kids, or to check emails.

Jonathan 7 August, 2014 um 11:21 pm

PTAB8000 now fully updated with Google Play services…

Another successful customer..

Thank you! I had gotten an Emerson tablet for Christmas that was not compatible with the store. I had spent almost 2 hours searching the net looking for a solution, and then I found this! Works great! Thank you!

Kevin 28 December, 2013 um 1:24 pm

I have a Polaroid PMID708X and have had no luck with the install. I have done the factory reset multiple times and reloaded the files including the Google services framework, I get an message that the frame work and one time initializer are already on the device but does not give me the ability to overwrite them. Any tips?

Nate Hoffelder 28 December, 2013 um 1:49 pm

If it says you have the apps and won’t let you install them then go on to the next app. Try ti install that.Keep going, and then see if you have Android Market or Google Play.

Kevin 28 December, 2013 um 6:23 pm

I have installed all 4 files, get all the way to set up account email, after that market closes. I have done the factory reset and no success.

Nate Hoffelder 28 December, 2013 um 10:15 pm

This trick doesn’t work on all tablets, sorry.
