iBooks Launches in China
Apple launched iBooks in China today, along with iTunes (movies) and Apple Music.
iBooks carries a broad catalog of English-language titles as well as a wide selection of both paid and free Chinese language books from top local publishers, including Big Head Son & Little Head Dad by Zheng Chunhua and The Family Belongings of Chinese People by Ma Hongjie.
"Customers in China love the App Store and have made it our largest market in the world for app downloads," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. "One of the top requests has been more great content and we’re thrilled to bring music, movies and books to China, curated by a local team of experts."
Apple is also boasting that its digital storefront will be the first to offer Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series for purchase as ebooks.
China has quickly become one of Apple’s fastest growing regions, so much so that the Chinese market has been credited for the spike in iPhone sales when that country was included in the most recent launch.
Apple’s ebook competition in China includes the Kindle Store as well as several local bookstores such as Tencent.
