Kobo Clara HD Clears the FCC
Kobo’s next ereader has shown up on the FCC website, but unfortunately that is just all I can tell you about it right now.
According to the paperwork, the Clara HD is going to be made by Netronix, just like Kobo’s previous ereaders. Judging by that one screenshot in the paperwork, it will have an E-ink screen and Wifi, and it will run Kobo’s software.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you the screen size or whether the Clara HD will be waterproof. But it’s worth noting that Kobo’s last ereader was the 6.8″ Aura H2O2, and before that they released the 7.8″ Aura One, which suggests this is a 6″ model.
I can’t even tell you the launch date with any certainty (the embargo ends in September, leaving a long possible launch window).
But I can tell you this first of April that Kobo has a new ereader coming.
I can’t wait to see it, can you?

The FCC link doesn’t work, this one does. It seems that they tend to release models in May and September.

Thanks for catching that!

Do you think this could be the rumored updated Mini?
Nate Hoffelder April 1, 2018 um 7:05 am
I think it is unlikely but that would be pretty cool!

April fools. I should have realized since this was you 🙂

Since this was posted on March 31st it’s probably legit.

It is absolutely legit.
The practical joke is that I wrote it in such a way as to make you think it’s a joke. The payoff is when it launches.

This is not the updated rumor for the Mini. If you go to the FCC link, and look at the SAR Test Report, it is tested to the KDB 616217 D04 standard. This is the standard for "full-size tablets", which have a diagnal of > 20 cm (src: https://t2m.io/zZcHER, Paragraph 1. Introduction). If this was a mini-tablet (i.e. <= 20 cm), then we would expect to see testing to the KDB 941225 D07 standard (src: https://t2m.io/G7ZfUE).
For reference, the Kobo Mini had ~16.7 cm diagonal, and the Kobo Aura H2O E2 has a 21.5 cm diagonal.

The Clara HD has a 6″ screen. Or at least, the one on my desk has that size scren.
