New hi-res E-ink screen shows up on e-reader in Russia

On Sunday we saw the launch of the iriver Story HD, a new ebook reader that used a new high resolution E-ink screen (1024×768). Today I came across  a second ereader with that screen.

It’s the Magicbook M6HD, and it’s being sold by a company that I’ve written about before, Gmini. Like Gmini’s other models, this one has clearly been designed for the Russian market. It has a built-in FM radio, supports MP3, WAV, WMA and OGG audio files, and reportedly comes with several games.

It doesn’t have Wifi or a touchscreen, but it does come with 4GB Flash and a microSD card slot. The MagicBook M6HD is set to go on sale in Russia later this month with a retail of 5990 rubles (~$216 USD).

Weird thing that according to fellow russian e-books site http://www.the-ebook.org/?p=8842 it uses a screen different from iRiver.
Gmini claims it’s Pearl HD, not LG Display.
That Gmini site is down due to unpaid hosting is just adding a bit of spice :).

Yes, there are a number of details that don’t add up. For example, that’s the same hardware as a device with a normal 800×600 E-ink screen. For all we know Gmini photoshopped the other device with a tiny change.

And yes, the detail about the screen was just my guess. The Gmini website didn’t mention the new device at all.
