How to Overcome the Fear of Change

How to Overcome the Fear of Change

The discomfort of breaking out of the daily routine can sometimes be huge. The reasons for this can vary. If you have had bad experiences with change in the past, then the probability of you preferring to stick to what’s familiar is high. In addition, this fear can also be caused by a lack of flexibility.

An example of this is when you think that an upheaval in your life has caused you to lose control and that you can no longer cope. Below, you will find three tips that will help you better embrace changes in your life.

Accept that Changes are Normal

As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, the only constant in life is change. So whether you like it or not, changes are a part of life. Just like people have changed over the course of the centuries, so too will the things around you change.

You should learn to embrace uncertainty, especially when it comes to changes you have no power over. Of course, this is easier said than done, as security is one of the most important human needs.

But: you should be able to differentiate between healthy concerns and unnecessary ones. If you drift off more and more towards hazy presumptions and speculations when it comes to new circumstances, then this is far from beneficial. In such cases, you should try to be more confident and optimistic.

Challenge Yourself

Challenge Yourself

Just because what is familiar makes you feel safe, doesn’t mean that you should avoid discovering new things. You can start small so that you learn how to cope with changes.

For example, the next time you are sitting in your usual restaurant of choice, try ordering something new instead of your usual favorite dish.

If that causes you anxiety, then here’s another little trick you can also use in any other situation.

Ask yourself: What’s the worst that could happen?

In this example, the biggest problem would probably be that you wouldn’t like the food. But there’s also the chance you might discover your new favorite meal. But above all, this simple question can prevent you from envisioning the most catastrophic of horror scenes.

Remind Yourself of Your Strengths

It may seem trivial, but it is hugely important in relation to the fear of change: become aware of your strengths. It is usually those same people that have a fear of change that also have low self-esteem.

Conversely, this means that the higher your self-esteem is, the better you will cope in times of change. Remind yourself of the challenging situations you have already conquered and comfort yourself. This will allow you to trust in yourself and your capabilities.
