TextBook Search Engines

A reader commented the other day that I had left his favorite textbook site out of my list of websites where you can buy and rent textbooks.

He was right; I had left it out. But his preferred site wasn’t a place to buy or rent; it was a search engine. So I thought it would be a good idea to start a page of textbook search engines.

This list is by no means complete; I’ve never even tried to find all the possible sites. And the list is also mainly focused on paper textbooks, not digital textbooks. In fact, so far as I can tell only Inkmesh checks the prices of ebooks.

One more for your list. I built my first textbook search engine while attending Cal Berkeley and found I was spending a lot of time jumping from site to site to find who had the cheapest price Siebel tool tool that would gather everyone’s price and show to me in a single report. I fellow students asked me to share my little tool so I put it on a website. I was 10 years ago. Over the years I’ve expanded the site adding rental textbooks two years ago and e-books last year. The site is used by thousands of students everyday. My hope is that the making it easy for students to find the cheapest source will reward those booksellers and help keep textbook prices down.
