Alcatel One Touch’s New Tablet is So Huge It Has Its Own Kickstand

Alcatel One Touch has joined the obelisk-class tablet makers today with its new Xess tablet. This smartphone maker is showing off a 17″ Android tablet at IFA Berlin this week, a tablet which is so large that it has not one but two kickstands as well as a handle:

The Xess tablet is still a prototype, which in this case means that many of the specs are still up in the air, but Alcatel Onetouch has released a few details.

The tablet is running Android 5.1 Lollipop on a 1.5 GHz MediaTek MT8783T 8-core CPU with 2GB of RAM, 32GB storage, and a 10Ah battery.

The 17″ IPS display has a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080, and the tablet has a stylus (you can see it in the image above), as well as a fingertip-friendly touchscreen and  hands-free gesture-based controls.

This is a relatively thin tablet for its size, and Alcatel pulled that off by squeezing all of the electronics into the circle on the back. This includes the ports, which are hidden under the silver Alcatel Onetouch logo. The tablet also has stereo speakers, a 5MP front-facing camera, and a microSD card slot.

It looks to me like Alcatel’s engineer’s have only just discovered the all-in-one Windows PCs that Microsoft was pushing a few years ago, and thought they could do better.

This isn’t the first large Android tablet, nor is it even the biggest, but it does look like it is the best-designed. The gesture controls in particular put the Xess in a class above most of its competitors.

The Xess is expected to ship sometime later this year.

That’s a nice design.
Take out the ARM SOC and Android and slip in an ATOM and Win10 and they’ll have something that will sell.

Of course, anybody with a touch-enabled monitor can get there by plugging in a $129 StickPC…

Having VESA mounting holes would make this a winner in the POS or other commercial displays field. Or even as a all-in-one-pc.
