Amazon Leases a Store Front in San Jose, Light Industrial Space in Cleveland

The online retailer is going to open its second bookstore in the San Francisco metro area, and is also setting up a facility in Northeastern Ohio.

Crain’s Cleveland reports that Amazon has leased two-thirds of a new light industrial / warehouse building:

Online retailing has delivered again in Northeast Ohio, as Amazon has leased most of a new industrial building at Bluestone Business Center in Euclid.

According to a lease memorandum filed March 8 in Cuyahoga County property records, the Seattle-based company has leased upward of 80,000 square feet in Bluestone Business Center II, 26555 Bluestone Blvd.

Bluestone developer Ray Fogg Jr., CEO of Brooklyn Heights-based Ray Fogg Corporate Properties, would say nothing about the lease other than, "You see what it says."

The brochure and Google Maps listing for this building show that it is not set up for retail customers, and that the space is not a fraction of the size of one of Amazon’s warehouses (which Amazon likes to build from scratch, anyway).

So yes, this is most likely a "last mile" facility for same day deliveries (unless Amazon is beta testing a new idea).

The newly leased store front in San Jose, on the other hand, is pretty obviously going to be an Amazon Books  (it’s already listed on Amazon’s website).

From Silicon Valley Business Journal:

Amazon Books is opening its first Silicon Valley location this year in San Jose’s Santana Row.

The store will open its doors this summer in about 5,500 square feet at 333 Santana Row, Suite 2. It’s the same strip of retail in Federal Realty Investment Trust’s massive mixed-use development that is home to companies like Tesla, Gucci and Tumi.

“The ‘technology meets traditional shopping’ approach of Amazon Books reflects a greater trend towards a new retail strategy that appeals to the tech-savvy and fashion-forward Santana Row customer who appreciates boutique and innovative services,” Jeff Kreshek, senior vice president of west coast leasing for Federal Realty Investment Trust said in a statement posted on LinkedIn Wednesday.

Amazon’s newest bookstore is going to be located in a high-end retail strip mall with neighbors like Lululemon, Tesla, and Gucci. It has an attached parking garage.

Counting the two stores in or near Seattle, Boston, Manhattan, and now San Francisco, plus the stores planned or operating in Portland, Chicago, San Diego, and New Jersey, this is Amazon’s twelfth bookstore.
