Kobo’s new retail partner has a broken website

Kobo announced this morning that they’ve added a new retail partner, this time in the Caribbean. The Nigel R Khan Bookseller Chain has 9 stores on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, where they will be selling the Kobo Wifi.

The Kobo Touch wasn’t mentioned nor was the price of the Kobo Wifi, both of which are rather odd mistakes. My usual first step in writing about retailers is to visit the website. Surprisingly, it wasn’t listed in the press release. A little bit of Googling turned up a broken site that a Kobo rep confirmed was the indeed correct site.

Okay, this is a retail partner, and that means they won’t necessarily sell the ebooks.  You could argue that a website isn’t critically important. But I disagree. In this day and age a website is always important. If it’s down you need to have a functioning error message of some kind.

Not a stunning debut, by any measure.

However, the partnership is a retail partnership — selling Kobos in bricks and mortar stores. And, nothing wrong with selling the wifi edition only at this time: that’s the same relationship with WHSmith in the UK. The original Kobo launched in Canada, then the US, then the rest of the world over a three month window. Perhaps a similar roll out is being planned for the Kobo Touch.
