Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Script Book Up for Pre-Order

harry potter cursed childThe long-promised new installment in the Harry Potter saga went up for pre-order today on Amazon and B&N.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is less the eight novel in the series than it is a copy of the script for the stage play of the same name. The book is due out at the end of the month, with a price of $15 (digital) and $18 (paper).

The play focuses on the adventures of Harry’s youngest child, Albus Severous Potter:

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

According to the listing, the script book will be available until early 2017, "after which a Definitive Edition of the script will go on sale".

There’s no word yet on when or if the script will be turned into a novel, or perhaps an audio production, but the latter is more likely than the former.

I think A LOT of people are going to be surprised and unhappy when this thing arrives and it’s formatted and reads like a script.

Well, it says right on the cover that it is a script for a play.
And all the hype has been about the play.
Not much roon to gripe there.

Oh, I understand that…but I still think a lot of people aren’t paying attention to that. There are several midnight release events for this book around my city like there were for the later Harry Potter releases. I think people have latched onto this as a "new book" when that’s not exactly what they are going to get.

she could have adapted it into a novel by now if she’d spent less time tweeting.

What I find strange, and it’s also right on the cover, is the play is already based on a story; this script is an adaptation credited to Jack Thorne.

The cynic in me wonders if this is being released as a script because that adds a lot of extra white space and results in a thicker volume that you can sell for $15-$25. Had this been released as a story, it might not be any larger than Fantastic Beasts or Quidditch Through the Ages; then it’s only a $8-$15 book.

JKR should have left it as 7 books if she wasnt prepared to write this as a novel as people will be disappointed when they coughed up alot of money for something that will be a boring read as a script for a play.

JKR wanted to write a play, not another novel. At least she is sharing the script with the world.
