Amazon to Launch in Brazil in September

It looks like recent rumors suggesting that Brazilian Kindle Store would open in June were a little optimistic. Brasil Econômico is reporting that they have their hands on an internal planning doc for the retail giant, and it says that Amazon  won't open a local site until 1 September.

I wonder if they're having trouble translating into Brazilian? (hint: there is no such language) Amazon is said to be looking for a distribution center in São Paulo, which they would  use as the basis for entry into the retail market.  According to the source, Amazon  will start with a limited selection of merchandise, including CDs, DVDs, books, video games and software. They won't be selling large items like TVs at first.

In the first 4 months, Amazon is expecting to sell a million items from the new site. In 2013, it is estimated to reach 4.8 million items.

Once again, I wouldn't read too much into this. Just because Amazon is going to launch a local site doesn't mean they'll also launch a Kindle Store at the same time. Remember, the Spanish Amazon site was launched months before the Spanish Kindle Store.

On the other hand, it's safe to assume that the Kindle will come to Brazil  fairly soon. All signs point that way, including language support, recent hires, and previous rumors.  At this point the Brazilian Kindle Store is a matter of when, not if.
