100k e-readers sold in the Netherlands in the last 12 months

Bol.com are about to celebrate the 1st anniversary of their ebookstore, and they are surprised at how fast it has grown. Ebooks now make up 5% of their total book sales.

"We estimate in the last 12 months 100,000 ereaders were sold in the Netherlands. Compare that to the iPhone, which in the past three years 450,000 were sold in the Netherlands, " said Daniel Roper, managing director at bol.com. "Of the 60 Bestsellers, half are available as a digital book. As more and more publishers and authors realize that digital reading is embraced by consumers, we expect the number of digital titles will grow rapidly in the coming years . "

Nate Hoffelder is the founder and editor of The Digital Reader: "I've been into reading ebooks since forever, but I only got my first ereader in July 2007. Everything quickly spiraled out of control from there. Before I started this blog in January 2010 I covered ebooks, ebook readers, and digital publishing for about 2 years as a part of MobileRead Forums. It's a great community, and being a member is a joy. But I thought I could make something out of how I covered the news for MobileRead, so I started this blog."
